Issue 01’s theme is “Unearthed.” What is out of sight in our forests right now? What needs more light? What needs to be uprooted?
We have featured art, writing, and photography from 13 fantastic contributors with diverse backgrounds and connections to our forests. This publication evokes the curiosity of discovering, the challenges that arise when our forests change beyond recognition, and what we can uncover in the midst of constant transformation.
Our physical copies are printed on 100% recycled paper and are available to order now.
About Us
Cambium is a project that promotes meaningful exchanges about forestry in a world that is changing faster than it can adapt.
Cambium, in Latin, means “change” and “exchange.” Cambium is also a term used to refer to the thin layer of cells that create outward growth in between the wood and the bark of a tree. It is, in essence, the dynamic lifeblood of a tree. It is at once a fragile and powerful thing. Cut the cambium layer in a thin line around the trunk, and that tree will die. Cut most of the cambium layer but leave some, and a tree can survive. Resilient and tender. Growing and solidifying. Vulnerable, yet surprisingly strong.
This platform is a didactic and sapient love letter to the trees and their environment. It is built on thoughtful dialogue, new ideas, and futuristic dreams on how we as a people and force relate to our forested lands and how they relate to us. How do we change each other for better and for worse? How may we shape this relationship to continually improve? How can we reflect optimism in dire times?
Cambium is an independent publication. We welcome outside-of-the-box thinking that creates a prism out of our forests and the many beings that participate in them.
We hope to have great conversations with you.
